History
Maxwell & Meyers, LLP (including its predecessor firms) has been in operation since 1930. Two of the four Judges of the 39th Judicial District of Pennsylvania are alumni of the firm.
The firm traces its history to W. L. Minick, who began his practice in Franklin County about 1930. Subsequently, his son, H. Blair Minick, joined the firm and the name changed to Minick & Minick. In June of 1939, LeRoy S. Maxwell, a new graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School, joined the firm as an associate. One month later W. L. Minick died. Beginning in 1940, H. Blair Minick and LeRoy S. Maxwell formed a partnership known as Minick & Maxwell. In 1944, the firm became a sole proprietorship of LeRoy S. Maxwell, when H. Blair Minick moved to Savannah, Georgia. Maxwell was District Attorney of Franklin County, Pennsylvania, from 1944 through 1948 and at the same time operated the law practice as a sole proprietorship. Robert P. Shoemaker (now deceased) joined the firm as an associate and subsequently started his own sole proprietorship. Anson B. Good (now deceased) joined the firm in 1952 and the firm name changed to Maxwell & Good. Good left the firm in 1957 to become Trust Officer of First National Bank and Trust Co., Waynesboro, PA (and subsequently President of the Bank). For 30 years he operated a Trust Department often held up by others in the industry as a model. Harvey C. Bridgers, Jr. (now deceased) joined the firm and subsequently became a partner in January of 1962, whereupon the firm became known as Maxwell & Bridgers. In February of 1966, Frank R. Clokey left his position as Federal Estate and Gift Tax Examiner for the IRS to join the firm. After several years he left to join CBS in New York City handling advertising contracts. In the Fall of 1966, LeRoy S. Maxwell, Jr., a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School joined the firm and subsequently became a partner. Shortly thereafter, Joseph L. Doyle (currently practicing as a sole proprietor) joined the firm and subsequently became a partner. In January of 1977, Bridgers and Doyle formed their own firm and the continuing firm became known as Maxwell & Maxwell. From 1979 through 1997, the firm went through a series of name changes: January of 1979 – Maxwell, Maxwell & Dick; January of 1985 – Maxwell, Maxwell, Dick & Walsh; January of 1990 – Maxwell, Maxwell, Dick, Walsh & Lisko; January 1, 1994 – Maxwell, Maxwell, Walsh & Lisko; January 1, 1997 – Maxwell, Maxwell & Walsh; January 1, 1998, Maxwell Law Offices. During that time period, attorneys practicing with the firm included Carol Van Horn (now Judge), who left the firm to raise her family, and Richard J. Walsh (currently Judge), who left the firm to become a Common Pleas Judge. On June 26, 2001, LeRoy S. Maxwell retired. In 2005, Nancy H. Meyers (a graduate of Villanova Law School) left the District Attorney’s Office to join the firm and, on April 1, 2006, she became partner, whereupon the name of the firm changed to Maxwell & Meyers, LLP.
Over this period of 75 years, the firm has evolved with the times and is considered by many as a leader in the county in the wills and estates field. |
